Gaylord, Michigan – Lake-effect snow is expected to spread across northern Michigan beginning tonight and continue through Wednesday evening, bringing accumulating snow and increasing travel hazards.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, most locations across northern Michigan can expect around 1 inch or less of snow accumulation. However, areas southwest of Grand Traverse Bay are forecast to receive 3 to 5 inches, with localized totals of 8 inches or more possible in persistent lake-effect bands.

Forecasters say snow will begin spreading into the region around 7 p.m. tonight, with the heaviest snowfall occurring overnight into Wednesday. Snow showers are expected to gradually taper off by Wednesday evening, though some lighter activity may linger into Thursday night.

In addition to snowfall, widespread falling temperatures will impact the entire region. Wind chills are expected to drop to near or below zero by Wednesday morning, creating dangerous cold conditions for anyone outdoors.

The Weather Service warns that snowfall rates combined with gusty winds may lead to rapid drops in visibility, especially in lake-effect snow bands. Localized hazardous travel is possible, particularly in areas experiencing heavier accumulation.

Communities that may see the most significant impacts include Traverse City, Frankfort, Benzonia, Cadillac, and surrounding areas southwest of Grand Traverse Bay, while lighter accumulations are expected farther inland and east.

Residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed during snow-covered conditions, and dress appropriately for extreme cold. Even brief exposure to low wind chills can pose a risk without proper protection.
