GAYLORD, Michigan — A major winter storm continues to impact Gaylord and much of northern Michigan today, bringing heavy snow, powerful winds, and dangerous travel conditions across the region. The National Weather Service in Gaylord warns that localized blizzard conditions are possible at times, especially from mid-morning through early afternoon.

Snowfall rates will remain intense at times, with additional accumulations of 6 to 12 inches possible in and around Gaylord by tonight. Strong west to northwest winds are expected to gust between 45 and 55 mph, creating widespread blowing and drifting snow. These conditions may result in rapidly changing visibility, particularly on open roads and secondary highways.

Forecasters say the most dangerous travel window will occur late this morning through early afternoon, when the strongest winds overlap with the heaviest snowfall. During this period, whiteout conditions may develop quickly, making travel extremely hazardous or impossible at times. Even well-treated roads can become snow-covered again within minutes.

Power outages are also a concern, especially in areas that experienced ice accumulation on Sunday, where strong winds may bring down trees and power lines. Residents are urged to prepare for possible outages and ensure emergency supplies are readily available.

Officials strongly advise avoiding non-essential travel across northern Michigan today. If travel is unavoidable, motorists should carry winter survival kits, keep mobile devices charged, and let others know their travel plans. Snow drifting may continue into the evening hours, even after snowfall rates begin to decrease.

The storm is expected to gradually weaken overnight, but lingering blowing snow will keep travel difficult in some areas. For the latest updates, residents should monitor weather.gov/gaylord and local emergency management alerts.
