Gaylord, Michigan — Light snow is expected across northern Michigan tonight into Wednesday morning, followed by a surge of bitter Arctic cold later this week that could bring the coldest temperatures of the season to the Gaylord area.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Gaylord, a system passing south of the region will produce generally 1 to 2 inches of snow, with localized totals up to 3 inches near the Lake Michigan shoreline, especially in Manistee County, where southwest flow may enhance snowfall. Snow is expected to develop after midnight, with the highest coverage south of M-72 and near the Lake Michigan coast.
While snowfall amounts will remain light, officials warn of reduced visibility and localized hazardous travel, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute.
Attention then turns to a much colder air mass arriving Thursday night into Friday. The National Weather Service says the coldest air so far this winter season is expected to overspread the Upper Great Lakes, with high temperatures Friday likely remaining below zero across parts of the Upper Peninsula and well below normal across northern Lower Michigan, including Gaylord.
Bitter cold conditions are expected to persist Friday through Saturday, with gusty winds on Friday increasing the danger. Subzero morning temperatures are likely Saturday before slowly easing later in the weekend, though wind chills are expected to remain below zero into Sunday morning.
Residents are urged to use caution while traveling, limit time outdoors during extreme cold, dress in layers, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
The combination of overnight snow and late-week cold could impact commuters, students, and outdoor workers across northern Michigan.
