Gaylord, Michigan – Rain and rapidly melting snow are expected tonight into Friday, bringing potential flooding concerns and reduced visibility across northern Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a storm system will spread widespread rain this evening into Friday, with rainfall totals of 0.5 to 0.75 inches for most areas. Localized amounts of 1 inch or more are also possible.

Temperatures are forecast to warm into the 40s and low 50s overnight, accelerating snowmelt across the region. Forecasters say the combination of rain and melting snow could lead to localized minor flooding, along with potential ice jams on area rivers.

In addition to water concerns, widespread fog is expected to develop, leading to reduced visibility, especially overnight and during the Friday morning commute.

Officials urge drivers to slow down in foggy conditions and be alert for water-covered roadways in low-lying areas.

For early-morning commuters and overnight workers, visibility issues and ponding on roads may make travel more hazardous.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Friday as the system moves east.
