Gary, Indiana – Lake effect snow is creating hazardous driving conditions across northwest Indiana this morning, forcing drivers in and around Gary to slow down as snow-covered roads impact the Monday commute. Bitter cold temperatures are compounding the problem, making pavement slick and limiting the effectiveness of road treatments.

According to INDOT Northwest, lake effect snow is affecting the entire district, with plows actively working main routes and secondary roads. Snowplow dash cameras show snow-packed conditions on U.S. 41 in Lake County, State Road 39 in La Porte County, and U.S. 20/31 near St. Joseph County. INDOT officials are urging drivers to leave early, reduce speed, and allow extra space between vehicles as cleanup continues.

In the Gary area, major corridors including I-80/94, I-90, U.S. 12, and U.S. 41 are seeing reduced traction, especially on less-traveled lanes and ramps. Blowing snow and extremely cold air are allowing snow to reaccumulate quickly, even where plows have already passed. Crews will remain out through the snowfall and cleanup operations.

Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions on 511in.org before traveling and to carry winter emergency supplies. Cold and lake effect snow may linger at times today, keeping travel conditions slow and hazardous across northwest Indiana.
