Gary, Indiana – A Gary man died from gunshot wounds Monday morning, prompting a homicide investigation involving multiple local and county agencies.
According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, investigators were notified and dispatched around 7:51 a.m. Monday to the 5400 block of West 7th Avenue in Gary for a death investigation.
The deceased was identified as Elton L. Burks, a 52-year-old man and resident of Gary. Family members made a positive identification at the scene, authorities said.
A forensic autopsy was performed Tuesday at the Lake County Forensic Center in Crown Point. The coroner’s office determined the cause of death to be gunshot wounds and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
Mr. Burks was pronounced dead at approximately 8:32 a.m. by a Lake County Coroner’s investigator.
The Gary Police Department, Gary Fire Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Homicide Task Force were among the agencies involved in the response and investigation.
No information about suspects, arrests, or the circumstances leading up to the shooting has been released. Authorities said the investigation remains active.
Residents in the West 7th Avenue area may have seen increased police activity during the morning hours as investigators processed the scene.
