Gary, IN – One person was killed Tuesday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on I-80 eastbound near the 6.4-mile marker, approximately 1.4 miles east of Cline Avenue, according to the Indiana State Police Lowell Post.

The crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. when a white sedan reportedly changed lanes in front of a semi-tractor trailer, investigators said. The rear left side of the sedan struck the front right side of the semi, causing the car to spin and hit the concrete median barrier. The impact bounced the vehicle back into traffic, where it was struck by another sedan and “t-boned” by a second semi.

According to Trooper Regen Smith, the driver of the white sedan was found unresponsive. Another driver involved began CPR before Trooper Smith arrived and continued life-saving efforts using an automated external defibrillator (AED) until EMS personnel took over.

The driver was transported to Northlake Hospital in Gary, where she was pronounced deceased. Authorities confirmed that family members have been notified, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office will release further information later this afternoon.

The eastbound lanes of I-80 were temporarily closed for crash reconstruction and cleanup. Indiana State Police remind motorists to drive cautiously and avoid distractions when traveling near large commercial vehicles.
