Oakland, MD – Mountain roads across western Maryland and the Potomac Highlands could turn snow-covered after 10 p.m. Tuesday, setting up a slick and windy Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 p.m. tonight until 10 a.m. Wednesday for Western and Eastern Garrett counties in Maryland, Western Highland County in Virginia, and Western Grant and Western Pendleton counties in West Virginia. Snow totals of 3 to 5 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts above 2,500 feet. Wind gusts between 35 and 45 mph may develop overnight, with stronger gusts possible above 3,500 feet.

Travel along I-68 and US-40 west of Frostburg, WV-48 west of Moorefield, US-33 and WV-28 west of Franklin, and US-250 west of Monterey could become hazardous. A light glaze of ice may form along eastern-facing ridges Wednesday morning as temperatures hover near freezing.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check road conditions by calling 511. Gusty winds combined with heavier snow could bring down tree limbs and isolated power lines.

Snow will taper late Wednesday morning, but slick conditions may linger through midday at higher elevations.
