Galatia, IL – A 21-year-old southern Illinois man is facing multiple felony charges following a fatal crash earlier this month in Saline County.

According to the Illinois State Police, Jacob C. Ahrens of Ridgway has been charged with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs involving death (Class 2 felonies) and two counts of aggravated DUI involving personal injury (Class 4 felonies). The charges stem from a deadly crash reported on August 8 at approximately 1:58 a.m.

Troopers said the wreck occurred on Illinois Route 34, about one mile west of Harco Road near Galatia. Investigators reported that a Chevrolet Silverado, allegedly driven by Ahrens, veered off the roadway before striking a ditch.

Authorities said Ahrens and one passenger were airlifted to a regional hospital with injuries. A second passenger, identified as 20-year-old Mattix T. Sandifer of Ridgway, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Saline County State’s Attorney’s Office announced the charges Friday following a detailed review of the incident. Prosecutors allege that Ahrens was under the influence at the time of the crash, which resulted in the loss of life and injuries.

State Police emphasized that the charges are accusations and not evidence of guilt. Ahrens is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This case remains under investigation as prosecutors move forward with felony proceedings.
