Gainesville, FL – A Gainesville man was arrested Tuesday night after authorities say he allegedly threatened a victim with a firearm and a baseball bat while demanding money at a residence in northeast Gainesville.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Tuesday evening to a reported armed disturbance in the 7700 block of NE Waldo Road. Investigators say Deputy M. Valbuena arrived at the scene after a call for service involving an allegedly armed suspect confronting a resident and demanding money.
Authorities say the victim told deputies the suspect, identified as 35-year-old James Nickell, allegedly came to the residence earlier in the day before leaving. Investigators say Nickell allegedly returned later in the evening and began demanding money while holding a baseball bat. During the confrontation, Nickell allegedly gestured toward his waistband and claimed he had a pistol, threatening to use the weapon against the victim and the victim’s dog if the money was not provided.
The victim allegedly reported seeing the outline of what appeared to be a firearm beneath Nickell’s shirt, according to investigators.
During the encounter, a witness reportedly intervened and pushed Nickell out of the residence, authorities said. The victim then called 911 while the suspect allegedly fled the scene.
Deputies canvassed the surrounding area and later located Nickell near the 5900 block of NE 78th Lane. After deputies allegedly identified him and conducted interviews, authorities say he was taken into custody without further incident.
Nickell was booked on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials say the allegations remain under investigation, and the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Authorities have not released additional information about the victim or whether a firearm was recovered.
