Gainesville, FL – A man was fatally shot Thursday afternoon in Gainesville after Alachua County deputies and U.S. Marshals attempted to serve a mental health order and arrest warrant linked to terroristic threats, according to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO).

According to ACSO, deputies had received an Ex-Parte Order for Ali Bayhan under Florida’s Baker Act following concerns from his family that he was armed and in mental distress. Overnight, new information from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) revealed that Bayhan had allegedly made violent threats toward law enforcement, a Jewish synagogue in Tallahassee, and several elected officials.

On Thursday, ACSO investigators and U.S. Marshals surrounded Bayhan’s residence on NW 35th Way. Around 3 p.m., Bayhan exited the home holding an object later identified as a cell phone and appeared to reach for a handgun in his waistband, ACSO said. When he allegedly pulled the firearm, six deputies and two U.S. Marshals fired their weapons.

Bayhan was pronounced dead on the scene. No deputies or Marshals were injured. FDLE is conducting an independent investigation, and all six ACSO deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
