Traverse City, Mich. – Gardeners across northern Michigan should take quick action Saturday night as a widespread frost advisory threatens sensitive vegetation from Ludington to Alpena.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Gaylord and Grand Rapids, temperatures are expected to dip as low as 33°F in areas across Northern Lower Michigan, including Clare, Leelanau, Otsego, and Mason counties. The frost advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday.
Skies will remain mostly clear overnight with light winds—ideal conditions for frost to form, especially in low-lying rural areas. Residents in towns like Gaylord, Cadillac, Baldwin, and Grayling are urged to cover plants or bring them inside to prevent damage.
While not unusual for late May, this cold snap could catch gardeners off guard following recent warm weather. Farmers and home growers alike should be prepared, especially in elevated or inland areas where colder air may settle more efficiently.
The advisory expires at 8 a.m. Sunday, but forecasters caution that similar conditions may return early next week depending on overnight cloud cover and wind patterns.
