Syracuse, NY – The National Weather Service in Binghamton, issued by the State College, PA office, has placed portions of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania under a Frost Advisory through early Friday morning.

According to the NWS, temperatures will drop into the low- to mid-30s overnight, leading to widespread frost formation between midnight and 9 a.m. EDT Friday. The advisory covers Onondaga, Seneca, Southern Cayuga, and Yates counties in New York — including Syracuse, Auburn, Penn Yan, and Seneca Falls — as well as Lackawanna and Luzerne counties in Pennsylvania, including Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazleton.

Forecasters warn that frost could harm or kill sensitive plants if left unprotected. “Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold,” the NWS advised in its Thursday afternoon alert.

Clear skies and calm winds will allow temperatures to dip quickly after midnight, especially in rural and sheltered valleys, where frost formation is most likely. Conditions are expected to warm later Friday morning, but another round of chilly nights is possible over the weekend.

Residents are encouraged to cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and disconnect garden hoses ahead of the cold snap.
