Wauconda, IL – A group of teens on a bike ride ended their day with a trip to Dairy Queen, courtesy of the Wauconda Police Department, after reporting a handgun they found on a public sidewalk.

According to the Wauconda Police Department, the incident happened Wednesday near the Route 12 underpass on Route 176. Four local teens discovered what appeared to be a Colt .25 caliber automatic handgun lying unattended on the sidewalk.

Two of the teens stayed behind to prevent anyone else from approaching the firearm, while the other two rode to the police department to alert authorities. Officers responded quickly and secured the unloaded weapon as evidence for further investigation.

Wauconda Police Chief David Wermes praised the teens for their maturity and quick thinking. “The bravery and common sense these young men showed is truly commendable. They turned a potentially dangerous situation into an example of community responsibility,” said Wermes in a department news release.

To show appreciation for their actions, Chief Wermes treated the boys to ice cream at Dairy Queen—a small but meaningful reward for what he called “a big act of civic duty.”

Anyone with additional information about the recovered firearm is encouraged to contact the Wauconda Police Department at 847-526-2421.
