Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Large hail, strong winds, and even a low tornado threat could impact parts of South Dakota late Friday as a round of isolated severe thunderstorms moves in from the west.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the strongest storms are expected to develop Friday afternoon into the evening hours, especially across central and southeastern South Dakota. A marginal risk (Level 1 of 5) has been issued for cities including Pierre, Mitchell, and Sioux Falls, with conditions favorable for hail over one inch in diameter and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph.

On Saturday, storm activity will begin to shift southward through the day, continuing the risk for severe weather in areas such as Yankton, Vermillion, and near the Nebraska border. The threat may linger into Saturday evening, although storms will likely be more scattered.

Residents with weekend plans should stay weather-aware, especially those attending outdoor events or traveling along I-90 and I-29. Keep phones charged, monitor local alerts, and have shelter options ready in case warnings are issued.

More updates are expected Friday morning as storm timing and intensity become clearer. Alerts may expand or be upgraded.
