Fresno, CA – Central California is bracing for a sharp temperature swing this week, with highs expected to run nearly 10 degrees below average by midweek before a warmup sets in again next weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a system pushing into the Pacific Northwest and northern California will funnel cooler air south, dropping valley highs into the low 80s by Tuesday and Wednesday. Fresno, Bakersfield, Merced, Madera, and Hanford are all forecast to hover between 81° and 83° at the week’s low point.

The cooldown will provide a break from recent late-summer heat, but the relief won’t last long. By Friday, a ridge of high pressure will build back over the region, allowing highs to climb quickly into the mid to upper 80s, nearing 90 in Bakersfield by Saturday.

Residents are advised to take advantage of the cooler midweek stretch for outdoor activity and energy savings before the return of warmer afternoons. Cooler nights could also ease irrigation demand across the San Joaquin Valley.

Temperatures are expected to climb again into next weekend, with the potential for another stretch of above-normal warmth if the ridge holds.
