Fresno, California – Isolated thunderstorms could bring lightning, gusty winds, and small hail across Central California through Tuesday.
According to the US National Weather Service in Hanford, the Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the central San Joaquin Valley and surrounding foothills under a General Risk for thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated cells may become strong at times.
Forecasters say thunderstorms that develop could produce frequent lightning, localized heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and small hail. Storm coverage is expected to remain scattered, but brief downpours may create ponding on roadways.
Communities including Fresno, Visalia, Hanford, and Bakersfield are within the outlook area. Thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon and evening hours when instability increases.
Drivers along Highway 99, Highway 41, Highway 198, and Highway 43 should remain alert for sudden visibility reductions and slick roads during heavier showers. Gusty winds could also impact high-profile vehicles, particularly in open agricultural areas.
Although the overall risk category remains low, officials emphasize that lightning can pose a hazard even with isolated storms. Outdoor activities may need to be adjusted if thunder is heard.
The timing of potential storms could affect afternoon commuters and students traveling after school.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and radar at weather.gov/hanford for the latest information as thunderstorm chances continue through Tuesday.
