Hanford, California – High temperatures are set to soar across California’s San Joaquin Valley, with much of the region likely to see afternoon highs above 100 degrees by Thursday and lasting through the weekend. According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a persistent ridge of high pressure is building overhead, raising the risk of prolonged triple-digit heat across Fresno, Bakersfield, Merced, and Visalia.

Communities along Highway 99 and across central California face a 50% or greater chance of exceeding 100°F on Thursday, with some locations—especially near Hanford, Porterville, and parts of Kern and Tulare Counties—almost guaranteed to hit triple digits. NWS Hanford warns that heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, especially for those working outdoors or without air conditioning. Residents are urged to limit time outside during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.

Air quality is expected to worsen, especially in urban centers and near agricultural fields. Local agencies may issue flex alerts or recommend reducing electricity use during peak heat. Drivers should remain alert for potential heat-related vehicle issues and carry water during travel.

Dangerous heat is expected to persist through at least Sunday, with only slight relief possible by early next week. The National Weather Service may issue additional advisories as the heat wave develops.
