Hanford, California – A surge of dry winds and low humidity could elevate wildfire risk across central California on Thursday, prompting concern for residents in Fresno, Bakersfield, and the West Side Hills.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, relative humidity will dip as low as 10 to 20 percent, with gusts up to 35 mph from the west and northwest across the hills and up to 25 mph in the Valley. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a moderate fire danger level through next week.
Communities near Interstate 5, including Coalinga and Avenal, should stay alert for rapid fire spread, especially with dry brush and gusty conditions. Residents are urged to review evacuation routes, pack emergency supply kits, and avoid activities that could spark a blaze—such as mowing dry grass or using chains on vehicles.
This elevated threat mirrors previous early summer fire conditions and comes ahead of what’s expected to be a hotter, drier weekend.
Additional advisories may be issued if wind speeds increase or humidity drops further.
