Mount Vernon, IL – Temperatures across Southern Illinois and surrounding areas have dropped below freezing, leaving roads slick and travel conditions dangerous through Wednesday morning. Local officials are urging drivers to slow down and exercise caution, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, lingering moisture from light snow on Monday has frozen overnight, creating patches of black ice. Temperatures are expected to remain in the teens to low 20s through Wednesday morning, with little improvement for travel conditions during the early commute hours.
Drivers in affected areas, including Mount Vernon, Carbondale, and Marion, should leave extra space between vehicles, reduce speeds, and avoid sudden braking to minimize the risk of accidents. Emergency officials have also advised limiting non-essential travel.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast brings colder-than-average temperatures to Southern Illinois, with highs struggling to reach the mid-30s through Thursday. A slight warm-up is expected by Friday, when temperatures may reach the low 40s. While no additional snowfall is forecast, residents should remain cautious as melted ice could refreeze each evening.
By the weekend, conditions are set to improve, with temperatures climbing into the mid-40s. For now, residents should stay updated on changing weather conditions and heed all local warnings.
