Minneapolis, MN – A winter weather advisory has been issued for parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin as freezing rain, sleet, and snow are expected to create hazardous travel conditions starting late Friday night and continuing through Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service, light precipitation will move into southern Minnesota late Friday and spread into central and eastern areas by sunrise Saturday. Initial snow and sleet will transition into freezing rain mixed with snow during the morning hours. Southeast winds are expected to remain light, with ice accumulations generally staying under a tenth of an inch.

In the Twin Cities metro area, including Hennepin, Ramsey, and Dakota counties, residents should prepare for slippery roads, with snow accumulations up to one inch and localized icing through 6 p.m. Saturday.

In western Wisconsin, including St. Croix, Pierce, and Pepin counties, similar conditions will persist from 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, with ice accumulations around a tenth of an inch likely. Northern Wisconsin regions, including Douglas and Washburn counties, face extended hazards from freezing drizzle expected to last through early Sunday morning.

Drivers are urged to slow down and exercise caution, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Up-to-date road conditions can be checked at 511mn.org for Minnesota and 511wi.gov for Wisconsin.
