Burlington, VT — A widespread freezing rain event is expected to impact much of northern New York and Vermont from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon, creating dangerous travel conditions and the potential for power outages.

The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday through 4 p.m. Monday for a broad region stretching from the St. Lawrence Valley and Adirondacks eastward across most of Vermont.

Forecasters expect ice accumulations between one tenth and four tenths of an inch, with locally higher amounts possible, especially during Sunday night and early Monday morning, when freezing rain is expected to be heaviest.

The significant ice buildup may lead to isolated power outages and tree damage, particularly as gusty winds develop Monday afternoon, placing additional stress on ice-laden power lines and tree limbs.

Travel is expected to be very difficult, especially during the Monday morning commute. Roads, sidewalks, driveways, and untreated surfaces will likely become slick and hazardous, increasing the risk of vehicle accidents and slip-and-fall injuries.

As colder air moves in later Monday, freezing rain will transition to scattered snow showers, accompanied by sharply colder temperatures and gusty winds continuing into Monday night.

Residents are urged to limit travel if possible, allow extra time for commutes, and use extreme caution if venturing outdoors. Road conditions can be monitored via newengland511.org for Vermont and 511ny.org for New York.
