Omaha, NE – Snow showers and freezing conditions are expected to create hazardous travel along I-80 and nearby roads Tuesday night. Wind gusts up to 40 mph and plummeting temperatures may cause flash freezing on untreated surfaces, increasing the risk of accidents.
According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, scattered snow showers will continue through the evening, with accumulations staying under an inch in most areas. However, any melted snow could refreeze after sunset, especially on bridges and overpasses. Drivers should slow down, allow extra following distance, and remain alert for sudden reductions in visibility.
Wednesday will bring sunny skies but blustery winds, with temperatures hovering around 22°F. Wind chills could drop as low as 10°F below zero in northeast Nebraska during the morning. Northwest winds are expected to reach 29 mph, creating bitterly cold conditions.
Later this week, temperatures are forecast to climb slightly, with highs near 33°F on Friday. However, another system is expected to bring a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain Friday night into Saturday, potentially impacting weekend travel.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and prepare for slippery roads throughout the week. Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready and keep emergency kits on hand if traveling long distances.
