BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The chance of winter storm impacts is increasing across central Alabama this weekend, with freezing rain and ice expected to be the primary concern for much of the region, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters say a weather system arriving late Friday and continuing through Sunday could bring a wintry mix, with the highest risk of icing across northern Alabama. Snow accumulations appear more likely north of central Alabama, while freezing rain may affect a broader area.
Current projections show a 60% to 70% chance of winter storm impacts near the Birmingham area, increasing to 80% to 90% across far northern Alabama. Farther south, probabilities drop to 20% to 40%.
The National Weather Service cautioned that uncertainty remains regarding how far south freezing rain or snow may extend, as well as potential ice amounts and impacts to travel and infrastructure.
Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates closely as details become clearer later this week and to prepare for possible hazardous travel conditions.
