Lincoln, IL – The National Weather Service in Central Illinois is warning of a wintry mix expected to spread across the region late Saturday night into Sunday morning, bringing the potential for slick roads and light icing before temperatures warm above freezing early next week.

Forecasters say the system will primarily affect areas along and north of a Macomb-to-Mattoon line, where freezing rain, drizzle, and light snow could occur overnight and into early Sunday. Minor snow accumulations and a thin glaze of ice are possible, especially on untreated surfaces.

Precipitation is expected to taper off by midday Sunday, followed by drier and colder conditions on Monday with highs near freezing. A warming trend begins Tuesday, when temperatures rise into the upper 30s and low 40s, bringing a switch back to rain by midweek.

Motorists are urged to use caution if traveling late Saturday or Sunday morning, as even light ice can cause hazardous driving conditions. The NWS also notes breezy conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday as the next system approaches.
