North Carolina – Freezing rain is set to create hazardous conditions across the northern mountains of North Carolina from Sunday afternoon through Monday. Motorists and residents are urged to prepare for icy roads, power outages, and potentially dangerous commutes.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Monday. Freezing rain could produce ice accumulations ranging from a tenth of an inch to near a quarter of an inch. Winds gusting up to 30 mph are expected to exacerbate the situation, particularly in areas like Avery, Yancey, and Mitchell counties.
Travel is expected to be treacherous, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks. The Monday morning commute could see widespread delays as icy conditions persist. Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and keep emergency kits in their vehicles, including blankets, water, and flashlights.
Tree limbs and power lines may be brought down under the weight of accumulated ice, resulting in localized power outages. Authorities recommend charging devices ahead of the storm and preparing for potential disruptions.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to rise slightly on Tuesday, easing conditions. However, residents should monitor updated forecasts and heed all advisories.
The five-day forecast predicts drier conditions midweek, with highs in the 40s by Wednesday. However, the immediate focus remains on staying safe as freezing rain grips the region.
