Snowshoe, WV – Drivers in West Virginia’s higher elevations are being urged to use extreme caution early Tuesday as freezing rain creates icy road conditions across parts of the eastern mountains.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for northwest Pocahontas, southeast Pocahontas, and southeast Randolph counties, including Marlinton, Harman, and the Snowshoe Mountain area.

Forecasters say additional ice accumulations ranging from a light glaze to around one-tenth of an inch are possible, especially at elevations above 3,500 feet. While many locations will see lighter icing before precipitation changes to cold rain, even small amounts of ice can create dangerous driving conditions, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and mountain passes.

The advisory comes during the morning commute, increasing the risk of accidents and delays. In higher terrain, icy conditions may linger longer as temperatures remain near or below freezing.

Officials warn that isolated power outages are possible where ice accumulates on trees and power lines, though widespread outages are not expected.

Motorists are advised to slow down, avoid sudden braking or steering, and allow extra travel time. If travel is not necessary, delaying trips until conditions improve later this morning is recommended.

Road conditions can be checked by dialing 511, and additional updates are available at weather.gov/rlx or through the National Weather Service’s official social media channels.
