Charleston, WV – The National Weather Service in Charleston has issued a Freeze Warning for parts of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, southwest Virginia, and southern West Virginia, effective from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Friday.

Forecasters say temperatures will drop to near 31°F, with widespread frost and sub-freezing conditions expected across valleys and higher terrain. The warning includes cities such as Athens, Ironton, Grayson, Welch, Grundy, Pineville, and Oak Hill.

According to the NWS, the cold conditions could kill crops, damage sensitive vegetation, and harm unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are encouraged to cover plants, wrap pipes, and allow faucets to drip slowly to prevent freezing.

This freeze event will likely mark the end of the growing season for many communities across the central Appalachian region. Clear skies and light winds will allow for rapid cooling overnight, followed by gradual warming during the day Friday.

The NWS Charleston advises checking their website at weather.gov/rlx and following updates on social media for the latest forecasts.
