Birmingham, AL – A freeze warning has been issued for a large part of Alabama, with sub-freezing temperatures expected across multiple counties early Wednesday morning. The warning is set to take effect from 1 AM to 9 AM CDT on April 9, 2025.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will range from 29°F to 31°F in affected areas, potentially causing damage to sensitive vegetation and outdoor plumbing. Counties impacted by the freeze include Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Etowah, Fayette, Jefferson, Lamar, Marion, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Walker, and Winston, with cities like Birmingham, Jasper, Anniston, and Gadsden under the alert.
The freeze could harm crops and unprotected vegetation, and residents are urged to take precautions. Those with in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them, while outdoor plumbing should be covered to avoid freezing.
It is advised that people protect tender plants by bringing them indoors or covering them with cloth to shield them from frost damage. The cold temperatures come as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of spring weather in Alabama.
