Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Freeze Warning for portions of southwest and west-central Virginia, northwest North Carolina, and southeast West Virginia, in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Friday.

Forecasters expect temperatures to fall as low as 25°F in colder mountain valleys and rural areas, with widespread sub-freezing conditions likely across the Blue Ridge and New River Valley regions.

The warning covers cities including Blacksburg, Wytheville, Galax, Boone, Tazewell, Bluefield, Lexington, and Hinton. According to the NWS, these cold temperatures may kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and could damage unprotected outdoor plumbing or sprinkler systems.

Residents are urged to drain in-ground sprinklers, disconnect hoses, and cover exposed pipes ahead of the overnight chill. Gardeners should also bring plants indoors or cover them to prevent frost damage.

This freeze event will likely mark the end of the growing season for many high-elevation and valley locations, with warmer conditions expected to return later in the weekend.
