Chicago, Illinois – Patchy fog and sultry heat kicked off Sunday across Illinois, with a renewed threat of damaging storms expected by late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms will linger south of I-80 this morning, but a stronger round could develop late Sunday into Monday morning, mainly west of the Fox Valley. These storms may bring damaging winds up to 60 mph.
Heat remains the dominant concern statewide. Afternoon heat indices are projected to climb to between 95 and 100 degrees Sunday, with a more intense wave arriving Monday and Tuesday. Central Illinois, including Peoria, Springfield, and Champaign, could see heat indices soar to 115°F. Residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
By midweek, the pattern turns stormier again. Localized flash flooding is possible Tuesday into Wednesday as thunderstorms bring heavy rainfall. Along Lake Michigan, dangerous swim conditions are expected Wednesday and Thursday due to high waves.
Hazards persist through Thursday, with additional advisories likely. Stay alert for updates from the National Weather Service.
