Chicago, IL – Police departments across the country are warning residents about a new and alarming scam that may be targeting owners of newer model vehicles—particularly in Midwest cities and suburbs.

The scam involves criminals allegedly tossing a cell phone onto the roof of a car. The phone, equipped with a magnet, attaches to the vehicle and remains unnoticed as the car drives off. The suspects then use the device to track where the driver lives.

According to law enforcement warnings shared nationwide this week, once the car owner arrives home, the suspects follow and later show up at the residence claiming the phone was tracked to that location. The goal, police allege, is to convince the homeowner to open the door under the pretense of retrieving the phone.

Once the door is opened, the suspects reportedly force entry into the home. In several reports, additional suspects remain stationed in nearby vehicles to act as lookouts or getaway drivers. In some instances, suspects allegedly tell the homeowner that police have already been contacted, increasing pressure to cooperate.

Authorities are urging the public to inspect their vehicles regularly—especially the roof, undercarriage, and wheel wells—for any unknown or suspicious devices. Anyone who finds a strange object attached to their vehicle should avoid touching it and immediately contact local law enforcement.

While the scam was first flagged in Ohio, police say it has the potential to spread quickly and urge residents throughout the Midwest and beyond to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.
