Fort Worth, Texas – Hazardous travel conditions are expected across North Texas Tuesday morning as refreezing snow and ice create the risk of black ice on roads, bridges, and sidewalks.
According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, remnant ice, sleet, and snow from the recent winter weather event have partially melted and are refreezing overnight. This process is expected to lead to widespread slick spots early Tuesday, particularly on elevated roadways and untreated surfaces.
Black ice is most likely along major travel corridors including I-35W, I-30, SH-183, and SH-360, where bridges and overpasses cool faster than surrounding pavement. Visibility of the hazard may be limited, as black ice often blends in with the roadway and can catch drivers off guard.
The National Weather Service warned that travel impacts could be significant during the morning commute, with increased risks of accidents and delays. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use extreme caution when approaching bridges, ramps, and shaded areas.
Temperatures across the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex are expected to rise above freezing by late morning or early afternoon. As temperatures climb, road conditions should gradually improve, especially on main thoroughfares that have been treated. However, sidewalks, parking lots, and secondary roads may remain icy longer.
Officials also caution pedestrians to be alert for slick conditions while walking, particularly near entrances, parking areas, and transit stops. Falls are a common injury during refreezing events.
For commuters, students, and early-morning workers, allowing extra travel time and checking local road conditions before departure is strongly recommended. Emergency responders advise avoiding unnecessary travel until conditions improve later in the day.
Residents should continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and local transportation agencies as conditions evolve through the morning hours.
