Fort Wayne, Indiana – Drivers and residents should prepare immediately as thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes and heavy rain intensify across northern Indiana through late evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, storms are developing in a “shallow supercell” pattern, meaning embedded rotation is already being detected. This setup increases the likelihood of one or two tornadoes, especially between now and 10 p.m. as storms move east across the region.

Areas west of Interstate 69, including South Bend, Warsaw, and Goshen, are seeing storms strengthen first, with impacts spreading toward Fort Wayne and Auburn through the evening. Wind gusts strong enough to down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages are also possible.

Heavy rainfall will accompany these storms, raising the risk for standing water on roads and localized flooding. Low-lying areas and poor drainage zones are most vulnerable, especially during heavier downpours.

Residents should stay alert for warnings, keep phones charged, and be ready to move to a safe shelter if a tornado warning is issued. Avoid driving through flooded roads and delay travel if storms approach.

The severe threat is expected to weaken after 10 p.m., but additional showers and heavy rain may linger overnight.
