Fort Wayne, Indiana – A dangerous surge of heat and humidity is gripping Northern Indiana through Thursday night, with heat indices expected to soar between 100 and 105 degrees across much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, high temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s each afternoon, with peak heat expected Wednesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 24. Overnight lows will offer little relief, staying in the upper 60s and low 70s. The agency urges residents to make sure their air conditioning is working, check cooling shelters, and look out for neighbors, seniors, and those without access to adequate cooling.

Communities including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Goshen, and Warsaw will see the most extreme conditions during the afternoon and early evening hours. Heat indices in many locations could push above 105°F, especially in urban areas and where humidity remains highest. Major roadways such as I-69 and the Indiana Toll Road may experience additional congestion and stalled vehicles due to the heat. Utility companies also warn of increased demand on the power grid; customers are encouraged to conserve electricity when possible.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor exposure, and check on pets and vulnerable friends or family. If you do not have air conditioning, seek out public libraries or designated cooling centers in your area.
This is the most intense stretch of heat so far this summer, and health risks increase significantly when the heat index climbs above 100°F.

Conditions may ease slightly by Friday, but another round of heat and humidity is likely to return next week. More advisories could be issued as the pattern continues.
