Fort Wayne, IN – A Fort Wayne man has died following an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon on the city’s northeast side, where police say he allegedly brandished a firearm and made suicidal statements before being shot by officers.
According to a news release from the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers responded to reports of an adult male making concerning statements in the area of State Boulevard and Cass Street at approximately 1:16 p.m. Monday. Investigators allege that during their encounter, the man indicated he was armed and officers determined he had made suicidal comments.
When officers confronted the man near the intersection, he allegedly produced a firearm in their presence. Police say an officer or officers then discharged their weapons, striking the man. Officers provided immediate medical aid until Fort Wayne Fire Department and TRAA Medics arrived. The individual was transported to a local hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries.
Detectives are now working to interview witnesses, gather surveillance footage, and review body and car camera video as part of their ongoing investigation. According to police officials, any officer directly involved in the shooting, as well as those who witnessed it, will be placed on administrative leave as part of standard protocol.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department Internal Affairs Division, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, the FWPD Homicide Unit, and the Indiana State Police, who will conduct an independent review.
