South Bend, Ind. – A quiet stretch of weather will give way to widespread showers and possible thunderstorms across northern Indiana late Wednesday, followed by a sharp cooldown into Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, rain chances will increase by Wednesday afternoon, with showers becoming likely by evening. Rainfall totals between a half inch and one inch are expected, with locally heavier downpours possible. Thunderstorms could also develop, though the severe risk remains low.
Cities along U.S. 31 including South Bend, Plymouth, and Rochester should prepare for a wet evening commute, while Fort Wayne and surrounding communities in Allen County face their highest rain chances closer to midnight. Travel may be slowed by ponding on roads, and residents are urged to allow extra time if driving overnight.
Temperatures will tumble once the cold front pushes through, with highs only in the mid-60s on Thursday. That’s nearly 15 degrees cooler than Wednesday’s predicted highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.
Rain chances diminish by Thursday afternoon, but forecasters say more advisories could be issued if storms redevelop.
