Indiana – Snow begins to quietly coat roads and rooftops this morning as 2026 opens with winter tightening its grip across northern Indiana. Light flakes drift through cold air, and pavement darkens quickly, signaling deteriorating travel conditions as the day goes on.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, snow develops this afternoon and continues into the evening. Most locations will see between 1 and 2 inches of accumulation, with locally higher amounts closer to Lake Michigan. Temperatures remain in the teens and lower 20s, allowing snow to stick easily.

Road conditions are expected to worsen steadily. Routes such as I-69, US-30, and SR-469 around Fort Wayne may become snow covered and slick, especially after sunset. Braking distances increase quickly on untreated roads, and visibility may drop during heavier bursts of snow.

While winds stay relatively light, cold pavement increases the risk for flash freezing. Any snow that melts under traffic pressure can refreeze rapidly, creating patches of black ice on bridges, ramps, and shaded roads. Drivers should reduce speed and avoid sudden stops.

Snow tapers later tonight, but impacts linger. Lows drop into the low teens, locking ice in place for early Friday travel. Crews will continue treatment, yet secondary roads and parking lots remain hazardous into the morning.

Friday brings partial sunshine and quieter weather. Highs recover slightly into the upper 20s, helping improve travel during the day. Cold returns Friday night, followed by a mostly cloudy and cold Saturday with highs near 29.

Sunday stays cold but calmer, with a slight chance of snow returning late. A modest warmup arrives early next week, though winter hazards remain possible during overnight hours.

Plan extra travel time today, slow down on snow-covered roads, and stay alert for changing conditions. Are roads slick where you’re driving this morning?
