Fort Wayne, IN – A dramatic temperature swing is expected across Fort Wayne and much of northern Indiana beginning Wednesday, with mild conditions giving way to rain, snow, and a potential flash freeze as colder air arrives late in the week.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office, temperatures will climb into the upper 30s to near 40 degrees Wednesday, continuing to rise into the 40s and even low 50s by Thursday. The warming trend will be short-lived as a strong cold front moves through the region Thursday afternoon and evening.

Forecasters say rain is expected Thursday, particularly along and east of Interstate 69. As temperatures fall rapidly Thursday evening, rain is likely to change over to snow. Snow accumulations of around 1 inch are possible in parts of northern Indiana, with higher totals west of I-69.

The most significant concern is a flash freeze. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply from the 40s into the 20s late Thursday night into early Friday morning. Any moisture left on roadways could freeze quickly, creating slick and hazardous travel conditions for the Friday morning commute.

Behind the front, colder air will settle in Friday, with daytime highs only reaching the mid- to upper 20s. Breezy conditions may add to the chill, while snow showers gradually taper off. Temperatures are expected to rebound slightly over the weekend, with highs returning to the 30s and lower 40s by Saturday.

The National Weather Service urges drivers to remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions late Thursday and early Friday. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and allow extra travel time as the temperature “roller coaster” continues through the end of the week.
