FORT WAYNE, Ind. — A calm start greets northern Indiana this morning, but change is closing in fast. Sunshine and mild air won’t last long — a strong late-week system will bring rain, gusty winds, and the first chance for snow before the weekend is through.

Today stays pleasant, with highs near 64°F under mostly sunny skies and a southwest breeze that could gust up to 35 mph. Thursday will be even warmer, reaching the mid-50s to upper-50s as clouds increase through the day. South winds will draw in enough moisture to fuel developing rain showers Thursday night into Friday.

By early Friday morning, steady rain and isolated rumbles of thunder are likely along I-69 and through Fort Wayne, with totals up to half an inch possible. Winds may gust near 25 mph during the heaviest showers. Roads could become slick through the Friday morning commute, so drivers should plan extra travel time.

Behind the front, colder air rushes in by Saturday with highs dropping into the low 50s. Light rain showers may linger into the afternoon before tapering off, and a few flakes could mix in north of Auburn and Angola by evening.

Sunday looks brisk and gray, with highs around 43°F and a continued chance of light rain or snow showers. Temperatures will dip into the 20s Sunday night, marking the area’s first widespread frost and an early sign that winter’s approach is accelerating.

Veterans Day next week could arrive with colder highs in the upper 30s — and more talk of snow on the horizon.
