FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Damp streets and gray skies will mark the start of Indiana’s first real taste of winter as a sharp cold front slides through Sunday into Monday, bringing a messy rain-to-snow changeover and the region’s coldest air so far this season.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, widespread rain will spread in late today and continue into Sunday before colder air sweeps across the region. The rain will gradually mix with snow as temperatures fall into the 30s, and by late Sunday, light snow showers could create slick patches on bridges and untreated rural roads, especially north of U.S. 30 and along the I-69 corridor.

The transition marks a significant shift after weeks of mild November weather. Highs will tumble from near 50°F today to the upper 30s by Monday, with lows in the 20s. Gusty northwest winds will add a biting chill, and brief bursts of lake-effect snow may persist Monday night into early Veterans Day. While accumulation should stay under an inch, even light snow could impact local travel or outdoor Veterans Day ceremonies.

Residents are urged to prepare for quick changes—keep wipers clean, check tires, and plan for slower travel during Sunday’s temperature drop. For now, midweek looks calmer and brighter with sunshine returning Tuesday afternoon and highs climbing back toward the upper 40s. Still, the late-week chill suggests this may only be the first round of Indiana’s early winter preview.
