Fort Wayne, Indiana – Strong winds are expected across northern Indiana on Friday, prompting a Wind Advisory for the entire region and creating the potential for travel and power-related impacts.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST Friday. Winds from the west to southwest are forecast to gust up to 45 miles per hour, with the strongest gusts expected between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Forecasters said the gusty winds may be strong enough to blow down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages, particularly in areas with weakened trees or saturated ground. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, including trash bins, holiday decorations, and lightweight furniture.
Travel conditions may be impacted, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, and buses. The National Weather Service cautioned that driving may be challenging on north-south oriented roads, where crosswinds can be strongest. Motorists are advised to maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel and allow extra space between vehicles.
In addition to the wind, the system will usher in cooler air, with afternoon temperatures expected to remain mainly in the 40s, noticeably cooler than recent days. While no precipitation or winter weather is expected with this advisory, the combination of wind and cooler temperatures may make conditions feel colder throughout the day.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken later this afternoon and evening as the pressure gradient relaxes behind the system.
Commuters, students, and daytime workers should plan for blustery conditions during the morning and afternoon hours. The National Weather Service recommends monitoring local updates in case advisory timing or wind speeds change.
