Light snow showers are expected across parts of northern Indiana today, followed by a return to much colder air overnight that could impact travel into Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, conditions will remain mostly cloudy with periods of light snow showers, mainly south of U.S. Route 30. Snowfall amounts are expected to stay below one inch, limiting widespread impacts but still creating the potential for slick spots on untreated roadways.
The most likely areas to see snow showers include locations near Kokomo, Warsaw, Fort Wayne, and surrounding communities. Travel along U.S. 30, U.S. 31, U.S. 20, Interstate 69, and Interstate 80/90 may be briefly affected during snow showers, especially during the daytime hours.
High temperatures today are expected to range from the mid-20s to upper 20s, which may allow light snow to stick to colder road surfaces. Visibility reductions are expected to be minor and short-lived, but drivers should remain alert for changing conditions over short distances.
Snow showers are expected to diminish this evening as clouds decrease, but colder air will quickly move into the region overnight. Low temperatures are forecast to plunge into the single digits and lower teens, increasing the risk of refreezing on roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks.
The National Weather Service warns that any moisture left behind from today’s snow showers could freeze overnight, creating patchy black ice, particularly on bridges, ramps, and lesser-traveled roads.
Motorists traveling late tonight or early Wednesday morning are advised to slow down, allow extra travel time, and remain cautious, especially in rural and shaded areas. Early-morning commuters, students, and overnight workers should be prepared for colder conditions and isolated slick spots across northern Indiana.
