Fort Wayne, Indiana – Drivers across northern Indiana could face sudden road hazards by the Tuesday evening commute as strong thunderstorms develop with wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, clusters of storms are expected to form between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the greatest risk along and north of the US 24 corridor. Areas including South Bend, Elkhart, Warsaw, and Fort Wayne sit within a slight risk zone where damaging wind and hail are the primary concerns.
Storms may intensify quickly, reducing visibility and creating dangerous driving conditions on major routes like I-69, US 30, and US 31. Localized flooding is also possible where heavy rain repeatedly tracks over the same areas, especially in low-lying roads and urban drainage zones.
Emergency managers warn that isolated power outages could occur if stronger wind gusts bring down tree limbs. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.
The threat will taper off later Tuesday night, but additional advisories or warnings could be issued as storm development becomes more certain through the day.
