Fort Wayne, Indiana – Snow is expected to redevelop across northern Indiana early Friday morning, bringing light accumulations and potential travel impacts during the morning commute, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service Northern Indiana office say snow will taper off early Thursday evening before another round moves into the region late tonight and Friday morning. This second round is expected to produce light snow accumulations generally ranging from 1 to 2 inches.
According to the National Weather Service, snow is forecast to begin between approximately 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. EST Friday, with the timing varying by location. The highest confidence for accumulation is across areas north and east of U.S. Route 30, including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, Warsaw, and surrounding communities.
In addition to snowfall, there is a low chance of patchy light freezing drizzle late tonight between rounds of snow. Even minor icing could contribute to slick conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Travel impacts are expected along major roadways including Interstate 69, Interstate 80/90, U.S. Route 30, and U.S. Route 20. Reduced visibility and snow-covered roads may slow traffic during the Friday morning commute, particularly during heavier snow bursts.
Temperatures Friday morning are expected to remain in the lower to mid-30s, allowing snow to accumulate on colder surfaces. Gusty winds developing later Friday could also contribute to localized blowing snow.
Snow showers may continue into Friday night, especially near Lake Michigan, before tapering off Saturday. Lake-effect clouds are expected to linger into the weekend, with colder temperatures following.
This weather system may be especially relevant for commuters, students, and early-morning workers traveling along northern Indiana roadways.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov/iwx.
