Indiana wakes to headlights glowing through thick fog, creating challenging travel conditions across Fort Wayne and much of northern Indiana this Christmas morning.

Visibility has dropped to one-quarter mile in spots, according to the National Weather Service. Calm winds and saturated air are allowing fog to linger, especially on city streets, rural highways, and along river corridors. Early drivers should expect sudden visibility changes and damp pavement.

Conditions slowly improve later this morning. Temperatures climb into the mid-40s, and fog thins gradually by late morning or early afternoon. For now, Christmas travel remains cautious but manageable.

Attention turns quickly to Friday.

Meteorologists warn a period of freezing rain is likely Friday morning, particularly across northeast Indiana. Ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are possible. Even light glazing can create slick travel conditions on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.

Rain follows later Friday as temperatures rise into the low 50s, easing icing concerns by afternoon. Still, the morning window could disrupt post-Christmas commutes and regional travel along I-69, U.S. 30, and U.S. 24.

The weekend stays unsettled. Saturday remains mostly cloudy with highs near 45 degrees, while rain chances return Saturday night. Sunday turns wetter and warmer, with highs reaching the low 60s and steady rain likely.

Behind that system, winter air surges back in. Rain may mix with snow Sunday night, and colder temperatures settle in Monday. Highs drop into the upper 20s, and snow showers become possible, especially into the afternoon.

Meteorologists continue tracking a broader winter pattern across the Midwest, signaling more wintry travel concerns as December closes.

Plan ahead today. Slow down in fog, allow extra time Friday morning, and prepare for changing Winter Weather conditions as post-Christmas travel ramps up across northern Indiana.
