Fort Wayne and South Bend See Top-30 Warmest October in 2025, Freeze Ended Growing Season

South Bend, IN – Northern Indiana wrapped up one of its warmest Octobers on record, according to new climate data released by the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana. Both Fort Wayne and South Bend ranked in their Top 30 Warmest Octobers, marking a milder-than-normal end to the fall season before a widespread freeze arrived late in the month.

In Fort Wayne, the average temperature for October 2025 was 56.1°F, or 2.9°F above normal, ranking it as the 28th warmest October on record. Precipitation was well below normal at 0.77 inches, about 2.18 inches under the average.

South Bend recorded an average temperature of 55.9°F, or 3.9°F above normal, placing it as the 24th warmest October. The city saw 3.27 inches of rain, slightly below the monthly average.

Both cities experienced their first freeze on October 25, roughly 10 days later than normal, officially ending the growing season for 2025.

Forecasters note that the mild trend could give way to more typical November conditions as temperatures continue to cool through the week.
