Fort Collins, Colorado – Critical fire weather conditions are expected across parts of northern Colorado this afternoon, prompting a Red Flag Warning for eastern Larimer and northern Weld counties, where strong winds and very low humidity will create dangerous fire-spread potential.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Denver/Boulder, west winds gusting up to 35 mph are forecast across the plains, with even stronger gusts possible in higher terrain. The most severe conditions are expected near the Wyoming border, including areas along Interstate 25 north of Fort Collins and U.S. 85 near Greeley.

Humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 13%, while dry grasses and fuels remain exposed, significantly increasing the risk of rapid wildfire ignition and spread. These conditions meet critical fire weather thresholds, prompting the Red Flag Warning from 11 a.m. through 5 p.m. today.

Elsewhere across the Front Range and Palmer Divide, elevated fire weather conditions will persist through the afternoon, though winds may be slightly lighter compared to areas closer to the Wyoming state line. Gusts up to 50 mph are possible in higher elevations, increasing the risk of wind-driven fire behavior in foothill locations.

Officials urge residents and travelers to strictly follow burn bans and avoid any activities that could create sparks. This includes postponing debris burning, securing trailer chains, and properly disposing of cigarettes. Driving or parking on dry grass is strongly discouraged, especially along roadways such as I-25, CO-14, and CO-392.

Motorists should also be aware that fast-moving grass fires can reduce visibility with little warning, creating sudden hazards for drivers and emergency responders.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later this evening as winds weaken and humidity recovers. Until then, residents, commuters, and outdoor workers—particularly those operating equipment—are urged to remain fire-aware and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
