Forsyth County, GA – Authorities are investigating a deadly domestic-related shooting that left an off-duty Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Deputy dead and a teenager hospitalized Saturday evening.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at 7:49 p.m. on Sept. 27 after a 911 caller in the Villages at Shakerag subdivision reported that their neighbor had shown up at the door bleeding. The juvenile victim told deputies her mother and her mother’s boyfriend had been arguing before shots were fired. She was taken to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and is in stable condition.

Deputies entered the residence and discovered a woman, later identified as an off-duty Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Deputy, deceased in an upstairs bedroom. The suspect had fled before deputies arrived but was identified as Eric Sumner, 43, of Suwanee.

Detectives tracked Sumner south on I-75, where Monroe County deputies located and arrested him after a brief chase. He is being held in Monroe County before being transported back to Forsyth County to face charges of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with intent to murder. Additional charges are possible.

Authorities are withholding the victims’ identities until next of kin are notified. Sheriff Ron Freeman expressed condolences, calling the incident “a senseless loss,” and thanked Monroe County deputies for their assistance.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office extended sympathies to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office for the loss of one of their deputies.
