WINSTON-SALEM, NC – A small fire inside the Forsyth County Courthouse late Tuesday morning prompted a full evacuation of the building, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. on October 21, 2025, in a men’s restroom at the courthouse. Sheriff’s Office personnel quickly located and extinguished the flames before significant damage occurred. The Winston-Salem Fire Department responded shortly after receiving emergency alerts.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, all courthouse staff and visitors were safely evacuated as a precaution. No major injuries were reported, but one person was transported to a local hospital for treatment related to possible smoke inhalation.

Investigators from both the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Winston-Salem Fire Department are working to determine the cause of the incident. Officials said the investigation remains active, and no additional details have been released at this time.

“It’s unfortunate that such an incident took place in a building designed for justice and public protection,” said Chief Deputy Henry C. Gray, Jr. “We are thankful that no one was seriously injured.”
